Why Do Dogs Guard Food?
Guarding possessions from humans or other animals is normal behavior for dogs. Although, most dog owners find guarding food in domestic pets can range from simply being annoyed to dangerous when aggressive behavior is demonstrated around children.
How does this behavior develop?
In some cases puppy breeders will feed litters of pups in one communal pan. If there is one strong pup in the litter, this one may become the strongest and overpower the other pups when they are feeding. If not monitored, one or two pups can take over the food. this may then serve as an imprint for the pup as he grows older to protect or resource guard their food.
What techniques can be used to improve this behavior?
To help new pups get situated in your home. Make sure to hand feed several meals, especially when the puppy is new to your household.
Establish an early bond with your pup by sitting with him/her and giving them one kibble at a time. Offer a nurturing, safe environment for your puppy. Show them to feel comfortable and safe with their food. Once your dog seems calm and comfortable with hand feeding, switch to holding their bowl in your lap and allowing them to eat from the bowl. Continue making the eating experience a safe and comfortable experience.
After a few meals, place your dog’s bowl on the floor. Doing this periodically will remind your pup that they can remain relaxed and not on guard while eating.
